newsletter17 how to pick sliding 266x300 What Is Pick Sliding?Pick Sliding is a guitar technique most often used in the rock, punk or metal music genres. The technique is executed by holding the edge of the pick against any of the three or four wound strings and moving it along the string. Simple isn’t it?

It is so simple that many guitarists use to add variety to their music. It is especially common in metal guitar to emphasize a change or add a little spice. First take a loud heavily distorted guitar, then get your pick and press it down on the bottom E string (thickest), and whilst maintaining pressure on the string slide it up the neck.

Try experimenting with different speeds and pressure until you get a good sound. This technique may not sound that crash hot by itself but if you use it to transition different parts of a song.

Go try it, I am sure you will get it right very quick.

Here is a video from Youtube user retn858 on how to do it and how it sounds, check it out!

Good luck with your practice.

After a couple of weeks off playing an electric I decided to fire up my under the desk guitar rig which consists of a (boss RC-20X) Loopstation, a (Line 6 Echo Park) delay and a distortion box into a Music Man amp. After four hours it was about midnight and I was pretty burnt out but I whipped through the footage real quick and here are some random guitar snacks for anyone who gives a damn.

So, is there a marketplace for this (old school) style of playing? Well, plenty of people want to learn how to do it for sure, and it`s all in your hands and your ears for me. Buy the right albums too.
My commercial song based album project with reknowned producers Turei, George and 50hz is available here at www.jakeedwards.net:
When it comes to songwriting I just can`t sufficiently explain, no matter how hard I try, how, where and why to do it.

You need to talk to God about that one.

Mark McKenzie one of our Song Pond tutors has just rolled in fresh from a serious work out by the looks of things. I don`t know if that`s anything to do with his guitar prowess and fretboard lucidity, but maybe. After all, Freddie King worked days in a steel mill. Mark is definitely an interesting character and when it comes to playing guitar he seriously cooks up a storm.

Mark has just run through the solo and lead parts of  Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits` awesome, epic country-blues-rock, the Sultans Of Swing sitting here in the office on an acoustic guitar with both a pick and fingerstyle. Impressive stuff indeed.

So look out for The Sultans of Swing on Song Pond real soon. And don`t forget where country style licks from Chet Atkins through to Albert Lee can take you – the Sultans of Swing is evidence of that.
